Where's the footage of JSS you promised/threatened? I can vouch that she was singing along, but I have a sneaky suspicion about your "perfect pitch" justification; I think it was more of a lip synch:)

Getting back in the groove
Violet is awesome. She is a very contented child who sleeps A LOT and spends a couple of hours a day taking in this strange new world. I had an excellent massage yesterday (a plug for Jessica @ Wholesome Healing for the Easterners) and am feeling just shy of 100% just 1 week postpartum. Yesterday I was thinking that every mother should have a midwife, a few good doulas, and a massage therapist to ease the transition into new motherhood. Then I remembered the piece I started in SI comparing the writing process to childbirth, likening the teacher, consultants, and peer reviewers to the support system necessary to birth a healthy text. Feeling motivated to revisit that piece and our Challenger draft next week. I'll be in touch...

Announcing the birth of our beautiful 8lb. 6oz. baby girl at 10:41 am this morning, a home water-birth that was amazingly spiritual and serene. I'll post pics tomorrow and perhaps we'll have a name to share by then as well. Good nite and much love to all from a happy, happy mama.

Glad all the TRWPers are back home safely. Phenomenal meeting yesterday with the group formerly known as AALT. I really regret not recording as our dialogue as we weaved through classroom experience, research, myth, and inquiry strands. In a bold move, we have dissed the achievement gap rhetoric (my apologies to TBF, my thinking partner) and are working to reframe our agenda to focus on equity and excellence instead of labels and deficits. Now considering calling ourselves the LEEAP Team...Leadership for Equity, Excellence, Achievement, and Partnerships in the 21st Century ELA Classroom...testing, testing, 1,2,3...

a first today in my video response practice... A group of business writing students clearly plagiarized part of their portfolio submission. Playing the role of the "real reader", I started recording a video that detailed my reading of the portfolio, my difficulty in making sense of the writing because of the multiple voices/ styles that were competing in the piece, my suspicious that cut-and-paste was being used as a writing strategy, and my web search of some highly polished phrases that quickly yielded the original source. Then I found myself beginning to show my frustration and disappointment, becoming a harsh disciplinarian (not covered btw in Haswell's writing response roles), and I stopped recording because watching myself assume that role was disturbing.
I remember JJB's assertion that video makes her hyperaware of her response strategies, and watching myself react with that sort of emotion was a little scary. So I trashed that video and produced a short, let's have a f-2-f conference video to discuss concerns I have with your portfolio.
Now I'm wondering if the emotive cues I displayed in the first video could have value. Typically I address issues of plagiarism in a dialogic manner...tell me about your process in writing this piece? where did you feel frustrated? what strategies did you adopt to deal with that? how did you use outside sources? are you aware that your usage here constitutes academic dishonesty? The video doesn't allow me such an exchange. In these questions, though, I am asking my students to disclose their emotional journey through the writing, but I am uncomfortable disclosing my emotional journey through the reading when those emotions are not positive. Hmmm...

Disgruntled PC user here. State budget cuts are making my request for a Macbook less and less likely to be honored. I just finished converting JJB and TBF's .mov files to .avi files so I could create a WM playlist with my .wmv files for our Video Response poster session at ECU's Tech Think-In tomorrow. Found an online converter, downloaded codec pack, and after three hours of frustration, the Mac and PC videos finally play well together. Soothing myself by geeking on cool skins for my player and considering making a plea for better tech tools during the webcast interview...November 11 2008
Been "teaching" visual rhetoric for a week with little success, but today, I got outta the way, designed an instructorless class, and I am currently observing my 1st Years collaborating, learning, applying, and teaching each other about color, type, visual hierarchies, and the union of words and images...zen
